Philippine Eagle Center

The Center is home to 36 Philippine Eagles, 18 of which are captive-bred. It also houses 10 other species of birds, 4 species of mammals and 2 species of reptiles. Simulating a tropical rain forest environment, the Center offers the visitor a glimpse into the country’s forest ecosystem. Although the exhibits are used primarily to help educate the Filipino people on conservation, the facility is also considered a major tourist attraction in Davao City.

How to get there

The Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) is about an hour drive from the city and can be reached either by private or public transport. Buses going to Calinan depart every 15 minutes from the Annil Terminal located at corner Quirino and San Pedro Extension. Bus fare is at P30. From Calinan, take a pedicab going to the PEC. The ride is about 10 minutes and will cost you P6. Before entering the PEC premises, the Davao City Water District will collect an entrance fee of P5 for adults and P3 for kids. PEC entrance costs P50 for adults and P30 for youth, 18 years old and below. Tour guiding and the use of kiosks are free of charge.

Entrance Fees

The facility charges a nominal fee, the proceeds of which are used to support conservation efforts of the Philippine Eagle Foundation. However, guided tour and use of kiosks in the facility are free of charge.

Tours and Reservations

Guided tour is free of charge. It is advisable that visitors call the Philippine Eagle Foundation office and book in advance to ensure the availability of tour guides.

The Visitor's Lounge of the Philippine Eagle Center was constructed to provide a favorable impression on visitors, and to help the Philippine Eagle Foundation promote its conservation efforts. The opening of the Visitor's Lounged on June 4, 2008 was headed by then Department of Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano, and Philippine Eagle Foundation President Lt. Gen. William K. Hotchkiss III (Ret.). The event was also attended by Department of Tourism-XI Regional Director Sonia Garcia, Congressman Vincent Garcia of Davao City 2nd District, Department of Tourism Under Secretary Eduardo Jarque Jr., and Executive Director Dennis Salvador of the Philippine Eagle Foundation. An average of 100,000 people visit the Philippine Eagle Center annually.

The Peak at Gaisano Mall Davao

I haven't gone to Gaisano Mall of Davao for quite some time already and it made me unaware of what's actually new there. But my recent out loafing with Mikoi let me realized that I have squandered so much (new) things on that Mall. I am amazed by the mall's drastic changes, from their ceilings to their tiles and to spoil my day, Their new alfresco expansion at the carpark area which was called "The Peak".

Whats on The Peak? well, The Peak has a lot to offer to all davaoeños and tourists. You can either have a cup of coffee at Figaro while seizing the scenic view of the urban city, or you may eat italian dishes and pizza at Don Beppe's Pizza haus at the 3rd level, have some dip of chicken wings at Wings & Dips, try Mama Maria's Pizzeria's buy one take one pizza and or go eat at the other newly open stores there.

If you're on a family bonding, then The Peak is also the perfect place to visit especially at night, where the night view of davao is perfect. Some of the highlights are the fountains that turns into different colors. Here's some photos I gathered from the net.

Davao Museum

The rich cultural heritage of Davao stems from the different groups and tribes that populated the area throughout its history. For those interested, the best way to learn about them is by going to the Davao Museum.

The Davao Museum is situated some 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) from the heart of the city, and is located near the Davao International airport. This makes it an ideal stop for tourists and travelers.

The museum itself has two floors, and showcases the very best of its culture and crafts. In particular the handicraft, instruments and way of life of the various tribes are presented there. These include the Mandaya, B’laan, Tiboli, Manobo, Mansaka and Baghobo tribes.

When you enter the Davao Museum among the first things that will catch your eye is the timeline, or chronology of historical events of the province. It commences from the earliest archaeological findings, to the settlements of the various indigenous peoples, up to the present day.

The highlight of the Davao Museum are the showcase pieces featuring the various artifacts from the various peoples and historical periods. These range from tribal clothing, handicrafts, pottery, jars and vases (referred to as Martaban). There are also several pieces of jewelry that one can look at. In other words, all the crafts of the ancient peoples you will be able to examine and learn about.

In addition, there is a huge gallery of artwork in the museum. These include, but are not limited to, ceramics, sculptures and carvings of all the various groups and peoples that have lived in Davao. There is also a wide array of musical tools dating from the ancient times on display.

The Davao Museum also contains a large number of archaeological discoveries and artifacts that have been unearthed not just in the province but in several parts of Mindanao. There are also several items that came from the belongings of some of the city’s founding fathers.

Finally there is a souvenir shop right in the Davao Museum where you can purchase items, personally made by the local tribes. Nearby you will also see the women of the various tribes engaged in weaving in the T’Boli Weaving Center. Contructing the cloth from the abaca plants, the work showcases the various myths and legends associated with each tribe.

The Davao Museum is located at the Zonta Building, Insular Village Phase I, Lanang in Davao City, Davao. It is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Davao Magsaysay Park

As one of the famous landmarks in the City of Davao, Ramon Magsaysay Park was established to honor the memory of former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay. Many people consider its location very important as it features local government offices such as the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Foreign Affairs, and Philippine Tourism Authority. At present, it is one of the most famous tourist destinations, not only in Davao, but also all over the Philippines.

Although Ramon Magsaysay Park plays a focal part in Davao City, people still find the place very enjoyable, convenient, and accessible. To add more fun and excitement, people usually hold various shows, performances, and other forms of entertainment at this wonderful location. All of these events help attract both local and foreign guests to come and visit the place, thus increasing its value as a premier tourist destination. In some cases, schools and other educational institutions hold trips here to get a glimpse at the rich culture of the city.

As a highly recognized tourist attraction, people can do many exciting and fun-filled activities at Ramon Magsaysay Park, for they can unwind and relax at this beautiful place together with their loved ones, relatives, and friends. Ramon Magsaysay Park also features other interesting things, including the souvenir stalls, plant stalls, and skating rink. With the help of these souvenir stalls, visitors can bring home something interesting and quite memorable to their loved ones. In the meantime, they can purchase some ornamental plants and orchids for their homes. Meanwhile, the skating rink provides tourists and guests something fun to do while relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenes that this park provides. Additionally, there is also an amusement center for all the kids and the young-at-heart out there.

How to get to Magsaysay Park
The Park is easily accessible from any point in the city by private or public transportation. It is located in the main street of Leon Garcia Street next to the Sta. Ana Wharf, another historical landmark in Davao City where, in May 1903, the first wave of Japanese workers landed and served as agricultural workers. Those Japanese workers were instrumental in bringing about the development of Abaca industry in Davao. The Park is open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Museo Dabawenyo

After its opening in 2008, the Museo Dabawenyo has established itself as a top-drawing tourist destination in Davao City. Housed in the renovated old Court of First Instance building along Magallanes Street, Museo Dabawenyos has become a must see for locals and tourists especially during the Araw and Dabaw and Kadayawan celebrations. 

Inspired by Soledad “Nanay Soling” Duterte, mother of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte, the museum was built through the partnership of the City Government of Davao, the Culture and Arts Council and the private sector. It was inaugurated in March 2008 as one of the highlights of the 71st Araw ng Dabaw celebration. Museo Dabawenyo showcases the cultural diversity and rich history of Davao as well as Mindanao.

Among its attractions are the Indigenous People’s (IP) Gallery, the Moro People’s Gallery and the Old Davao Landmarks Gallery. The IP Gallery has exhibits on the five tribes of Davao City-Bagobo Tagabawa, the Jangan or Klata, the Obo, the Matigsalug and the Ata-Manobo with their tribal weapons, native musical instruments, and handicrafts.

The Moro People’s Gallery showcases the arts and crafts and tradition of the Kalagan, Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausug and Sama tribes. The Old Davao Landmarks Gallery shows interesting photos of the old schools, churches, houses, centers and buildings, as well as maps and some aerial shots of Davao City in the past. Also at the museum are bits and pieces of Davao’s historical mementos, tokens, icons, photos, illustrations, documents, costumes, furniture, among others” displayed at the Davao Global Heritage Hall of The Memorabilia Gallery.

The Contemporary Gallery featuring The Nanay Soling Duterte Hall is the “hall of changing exhibits showcasing Davao arts, culture, trade and industry”. It is the intention of the Museo Dabawenyo to support Davao’s budding artists whose works exemplify the Dabawenyo spirit.

Other attraction at museum are The Peace Counts Gallery, Museo Library and Audio/Visual Room, which stores documents and the museum pieces on Davao’s history, arts and culture, including all the scholarly books and studies written by Dabawenyos.

The Remarkable Dabawenyo Gallery/The Datu Bago Hall showcases photos of prominent individuals and groups who shaped and reshaped Davao through its historic years that began in 1848.

People's Park, Davao City

People’s park (Camus street) is probably the city’s most popular recreational destination. The City Government- owned and managed facility boasts of playgrounds, gardens, water features, walkways, artworks and art installations that depict the diversity of the city’s culture.It is also a favorite venue for various arts, cultural, social and environmental events of the city.

The People’s Park opened in the second half of 2007. Before that, it used to be the “Palaruang Panlunsod”/PTA Park, which hosted the athletic meets and sports events in the city. But then it was neglected for years and became a lair for criminals and home for the homeless. For that, the local government of Davao City decided to undertake a 71-million peso development of the PTA Park envisioning it to be a landmark of the city in the future.

And the future is NOW, the 4-hectare park is now a landmark!

Everyone who enters the park needs to undergo a security check. All my bags were thoroughly checked. Aside from that, the park also has a built-in surveillance system. Talk about real security!

Upon entry to the park, one will be greeted by the 425-square meter visitors’ center built with a durian dome design. (the picture above)

the park’s over four-hectare land area, almost 10,000 square meters were allotted to plants; that’s more than 1,000 species of trees and wild plants from Madagascar, Borneo, Indonesia, Cambodia, Central America, Papua New Guinea, dark rain forests of Africa and of course, the Philippines.

There are a lot of reasons why the place look like a small miniature of Davao City. For one it is very clean. It must be one of the few public places in the country that is free of litter. This is the reason why the place is very ideal for people who just want to relax. Secondly, it has carefully taken care of pines and trees that reflect so much the still-rich mountains of the green city of Davao. The place is indeed perfectly situated in the middle of the busy streets of city as it offers a simple retreat for those who have had enough of their tiring day at work.
